With the exception of archaeological evidence and a few papyrus finds, the study of the ancient world is the study of its reception – the copies, epitomies, and commentaries of earlier works produced by later scholars. The study of Plato is no different. Our understanding of both the texts themselves and their interpretation relies heavily upon their reception in later periods, and, in particular, the manuscript and exegetical traditions of the Middle Ages.

We are pleased to announce that the Proceedings of the Third CEMS International Graduate Conference (Budapest, May 30-June 1, 2013), entitled “Tradition and Transformation: Dissent and Consent in the Mediterranean” have been published by Solivagus Verlag. The volume is edited by Mihail Mitrea, doctoral candidate in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. We would like to thank to Mihail, as well as to the contributors for their work on the volume!

The Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) at Central European University and its junior members are proud to announce the forthcoming Fifth International Graduate Conference on Building, Bending, and Breaking Boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean World.

Mariana Bodnaruk, CEMS Junior Member and PhD Candidate at the Medieval Studies Department, is going to present a paper entitled "Inscribing Inequality: Late Antique Slavery in Epigraphic Evidence," at the XXIV Finnish Symposium on Late Antiquity (FSLA), Tvärminne, 11–12 November, 2016. The theme of this year’s symposium is "Slavery in Late Antiquity."
