CALL FOR PAPERS

Ottoman and Turkish Studies Graduate Workshop - I
May 30, 2025, Friday
Central European University (Quellenstraße 51, 1100 Vienna)

Vienna has long held a crucial place in the study of Ottoman and Turkish history. As a historical crossroads between the Ottoman and Habsburg worlds, the city has served as a space of interaction, confrontation, and exchange. Over the years, it has been home to groundbreaking scholarship that has shaped the field of Ottoman and Turkish Studies. Today, the Central European University (CEU), along with the University of Vienna, continues this tradition by fostering innovative research and interdisciplinary dialogue in these fields.
The Ottoman and Turkish Studies Graduate Workshop – I aims to bring together emerging scholars who are developing fresh perspectives and employing novel methodologies to explore the Ottoman and Turkish past. The workshop provides a platform for graduate students to engage in critical discussions, receive constructive feedback, and connect with leading scholars in the field. This year’s theme, “New Perspectives on Ottoman and Turkish Studies,” encourages participants to present research that challenges established narratives, incorporates interdisciplinary methods, or introduces underutilized sources.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
  • Revisiting Ottoman and Turkish historiography
  • Interdisciplinary approaches
  • Global and transregional connections
  • Material culture and digital humanities
  • Microhistories and everyday life
  • Manuscript studies and print cultures
  • Network studies and digital humanities
  • Diplomacy and borderlands
We encourage applications from graduate students at all stages of their research, particularly those who engage with primary sources and propose original theoretical approaches.
Prospective applicants should submit an abstract (c. 250 words) along with their name, institutional affiliation, and contact details to cemsconference@ceu.edu by April 1, 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-April. Should you have any queries, do not hesitate to reach out to us via the same email address.
Each presentation will be 15 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of discussion at the end of each panel. The workshop will be conducted in English.
