Advanced Certificate in Eastern Mediterranean Studies: Requirements

Requirements

Students who decide to register for EMS do not have to obtain extra credits but the following requirements need to be fulfilled:

1. Admission to the Department of Historical Studies.

2. a) 1YMA: Based on the credits required by the Department of Historical Studies to obtain the MA degree, EMS students must obtain 12 credits from the approved annual list of EMS courses. 2 out of these 12 credits must come from the course on Grand Debates in Mediterranean History (offered in the winter term). Source language courses offered under the auspices of the Source Language Teaching Group count towards the total number of credits, too, since language acquisition is a central aspect of the specialization, credits gained from specialized language courses will count towards the specialization credits.

b) 2YMA: Based on the credits required by the Department of  Historical Studies to obtain the MA degree, EMS students must obtain 14 credits over the course of two years from the approved list of EMS courses, including language courses offered under the auspices of the Source Language Teaching Unit. 2 out of these 14 credits must come from the course on Grand Debates in Mediterranean History (offered in the winter term).

3. EMS students must write their thesis in the field of one of the affiliated faculty from the Department of Historical Studies.

4. Participation in at least 5 events (lectures, special seminars, and workshops) organized by the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies is a must!

Students who enroll in the certificate program, become CEMS junior members automatically.
