The CEMS-award for the best MA-thesis written by a student who signed up for the "Advanced Certificate in Eastern Mediterranean Studies" will be given this year to Mariia Telegina for a thesis on “Ceremonial Representation in Cross-Confessional Diplomacy: the Ottoman Embassy of a Christian Ambassador to Moscow in 1621”. The thesis is an extraordinary achievement as Mariia provides an extremely sophisticated analysis based on unedited archival material, complicated by the complete lack of secondary literature on the topic. 

Dora Ivanisevic, who recently defended her Doctoral Dissertation on "Epitaphic Culture and Social History in Late Antique Salona (ca. 250-600 C.E.) at the Medieval Studies Department, won the International Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Departments of Religious Studies, Classics and History, Brown University (July 2017-July 2019). Congratulations!

This workshop brings together students based in the Central European region and working on innovative and groundbreaking doctoral projects in Ancient Philosophy. After presenting their work, each student will receive comments from a respondent working in their field followed by an open discussion of the issues and questions arising from their work.

Mariana Bodnaruk, CEMS Junior Member and PhD Candidate at the Medieval Studies Department, is going to present a paper entitled "Inscriptions of Late Antique and Early Byzantine Cyprus: The Imperial and Senatorial Self-Representation," at the First Conference on Byzanine and Medieval Studies, Nicosia (Cyprus), 13–15 January, 2017. The conference is organized by the Byzantinist Society of Cyprus.
